NTT Communications to Release Trial of SkyWay WebRTC Platform with TURN Feature

– Enables WebRTC P2P communication in highly secure network environments

TOKYO, JAPAN – NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the ICT solutions and international communications business within the NTT Group

(NYSE: NTT), announced today it has added Traversal Using Relays around NAT (TURN) functionality to SkyWay, its open platform that enables application/service developers to easily use Web-based (browser) real-time communications (WebRTC). The platform will be made available on a trial basis for service developers and providers on NTT Com’s GitHub page a software development support service beginning January 27. Parties interested in the trial should visit http://nttcom.github.io/skyway/en/ for more information.

WebRTC is an open standard that enables peer-to-peer (P2P) real-time communication for voice calls, video chatting and file sharing via PCs, smartphones, tablets and native applications without going through server-side systems. Direct P2P connectivity ensures higher quality voice and video streams, lower latency and fewer dropped packets, thus increasing the overall user experience. WebRTC is being standardized under

HTML5 by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

TURN enables WebRTC to be used without P2P communication by transmitting data through servers. It allows more flexible communication systems capable of using WebRTC to be constructed in corporate network environments where P2P communication is rendered unavailable due to certain network configurations, such as the network address translation (NAT) method with strict security policies.

Corporate users or/and service providers can now use SkyWay incorporating the TURN protocol as a cloud computing service without having to prepare additional server resources or install applications in an WebRTC server for P2P communication. Users first need to apply on the SkyWay website.

Availability will be on a first-come first-served basis.

TURN requires high network bandwidth and robust servers to transmit large-volume data, and appropriate security measures are needed as well.

NTT Com expects to release an official version of SkyWay with TURN after conducting the current trial to accumulate operational knowhow regarding TURN for improved functionality and reliability.

WebRTC is expected to enable more real-time, cost-saving services by bypassing server-side systems. It can be used easily by people of all skill levels, and requires lower support costs since plugins are not required by WebRTC-enabled browsers. WebRTC can be adapted easily to existing Web services and intra-company information systems because it is an open technology.

In cases where P2P communication with WebRTC is rendered unusable by certain NATs, firewalls, proxies, etc., incorporation of the TURN protocol enables WebRTC by relaying data through servers in environment that does not offer P2P communication, such as corporate system networks with strict security policies. Engineers embrace its advantages in providing services to wider users.

SkyWay Platform and HTML5 Initiatives

NTT Com developed the SkyWay platform to deploy WebRTC technologies that the company has been offering for free since December 2013. The source code library is open and available at GitHub, a software development support service. Both SkyWay and WebRTC technologies use HTML5, the newest version of the standard markup language used for the Internet. NTT Com, a leading advocate of HTML5 adoption, launched the HTML5 Lab in July 2013 and also HTML5 Experts.jp, a site that provides support to the HTML5 engineering community.
