Global information tech leaders to convene in Dubai to set ITU four-year strategic roadmap

An agreement was signed today in Abu Dhabi between the Government of the United Arab Emirates and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for the hosting in Dubai of the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2018 (PP-18). The Plenipotentiary Conference is the top policy-making body of ITU, the UN agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs), which oversees global radio spectrum allocation, the creation of global technical standards for ICT networks and services, and efforts to promote digital inclusion in under-served communities.

ITU’s Plenipotentiary Conference is held every four years. PP-18 will convene representatives of the organization’s 193 Member States to set out a roadmap for 2020-2023 at a time when information and communication technologies are transforming lives and societies around the globe. This specifically includes setting ITU’s general policies, adopting four-year strategic and financial plans, electing the leadership, and addressing key issues related to ICTs as requested by ITU Members.

IAI Announces Launch Customer for SATCOM Terminal for Fighter Aircraft

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) announced it has received first order for its revolutionary SATCOM (Satellite Communication) terminal with a conformal electronic-steered antenna for fighter jets. ELTA’s ELK-1882T SATCOM network system will be installed for the first time, on tens of very advanced Western fighters, with first deliveries planned for 2021. This network system is the latest technology developed by ELTA Systems Ltd., a group and subsidiary of IAI (IAI/ELTA). IAI/ELTA’s SATCOM solutions will be displayed at the MilSatCom Show in London, UK on November 7-9, 2017.

Entel extends network partnership towards 5G with Ericsson

New contract paves the way to 5G for Entel’s mobile network using the latest technologies, focused on 4G expansion, Massive MIMO and its evolution. Ericsson’s offerings include Ericsson Radio System and a virtualized IP Multimedia Subsystem (vIMS), using NFVi. Entel subscribers to enjoy services with VoLTE, Gigabit LTE speeds, better voice quality, and lower latency.

India overtakes US to become second largest smartphone market

After a wobble in Q2 2017, India’s smartphone market recovered quickly, with shipments growing 23% year on year in Q3 2017 to reach just over 40 million units. India has now overtaken the United States to become the world’s second largest smartphone market after China. Samsung and Xiaomi, which shipped 9.4 million and 9.2 million units respectively, accounted for almost half of the total market as the top five vendors continued to post strong growth in Q3 2017.

Intelsat, operator of the world’s first Globalized Network and a leader in integrated satellite communications, announced  that Chief Executive Officer Stephen Spengler today appeared before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation (the “Committee”), to deliver prepared remarks and answer questions from Chairman John Thune, Ranking Member Nelson and Committee members regarding the commercial satellite industry and next-generation services impacting consumers.

Comtech Awarded $7.5 Million Order from U.S. Army to Provide Troposcatter Equipment

Comtech Telecommunications Corp. (Nasdaq:CMTL) announced today that during its first quarter of fiscal 2018, its Government Solutions segment’s Command and Control Technologies group received an order for $7.5 million to supply troposcatter equipment to support U.S. Army activities throughout the Korean Peninsula. Major components of the troposcatter equipment will be provided by Comtech Systems, Inc.

“Comtech is very pleased to provide critical communications capability to the U.S. Army, particularly in light of the Army’s need for a high state of readiness on the Korean Peninsula,” said Fred Kornberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of Comtech Telecommunications Corp.

Ooredoo Group Officially Launches Operations in Gaza

As part of its continuous efforts to improve and enhance its services in the markets where it operates, Ooredoo Group has announced that its operating company in Palestine, Wataniya Mobile, has officially launched its operations in Gaza.

Wataniya Mobile will now be able to provide the residents of Gaza with an alternative option for advanced communications services directly through its shops and authorised dealers in the Strip.

The launch event, which took place in Gaza, was attended by senior Ooredoo executives, including Sheikh Saud bin Nasser Al Thani, Group Chief Executive Officer – Waleed Al Sayed, Deputy Group Chief Executive Officer and Chief Executive Officer of Ooredoo Qatar – Khaled Al Mahmoud, Group Chief Officer of Small and Medium Companies – and Mustafa Al Qatami, Senior Director of Branding and Corporate Communications, Ooredoo Qatar.

Samsung, Huawei and Amazon Failing Greenpeace’s ‘Green’ Electronics Guide

San Francisco, 17 October 2017 – Fairphone and Apple are ahead of brands such as Samsung, Huawei and Amazon, which are failing to take responsibility for their environmental footprints according to Greenpeace USA’s latest Guide to Greener Electronics.

Greenpeace USA scored 17 of the world’s leading tech companies based on their transparency, performance and advocacy efforts in three areas critical to putting the sector on a sustainable path: reduction of emissions through renewable energy, use of recycled materials, and elimination of hazardous chemicals.

BT and Airbus create cyber security Masterclass competition in London

BT in partnership with Airbus to host 2017 Cyber Security Challenge UK Masterclass finale in November in collaboration with NCA, Bank of England, Cisco, McAfee, Checkpoint, De Montfort University and 4PumpCourt.

This advanced cyber security competition will put candidates through a series of tests simulating real-life cyber security scenarios.

Singtel and Ericsson to launch Singapore’s first 5G Center of Excellence

Singtel and Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) will jointly establish a Center of Excellence (CoE) to facilitate 5G development and deployment in Singapore. 5G, the next-generation mobile network technology, is expected to roll out globally from 2020 and will deliver massive connectivity, ultra-low latency, gigabit speeds, and enable advanced applications such as smart cities, Internet of Things (IoT), augmented reality, and autonomous vehicles.

Co-funded by Singtel and Ericsson with an initial investment of 2 million Singapore Dollars over the next three years, CoE aims to spearhead the development of Singapore’s 5G mobile network infrastructure to support future Smart Nation initiatives. It will also be open to Optus, and Singtel’s regional associates across Asia and Africa to encourage knowledge sharing within the Singtel Group.

Ooredoo launches mobile money solution-M-Pitesan in Myanmar

NEW DELHI: Ooredoo Myanmar said that it has launched mobile money solution-M-Pitesan in Myanmar for mobile users  to enjoy instant money transfers and efficient payments via their feature phone or smartphones.

A secure and reliable solution, M-Pitesan combines state-of-the art technology, advanced customer security features, easy access and dedicated 24/7 customer support for mobile users. In the near future Ooredoo plans to launch further developments of the service to include QR code payments for goods and services, and bill payments for utilities and municipal services.

M-Pitesan enables secure money transfers between Myanmar mobile numbers through a dedicated mobile wallet for Ooredoo customers or an Ooredoo store for non-registered users. In addition, M-Pitesan is the only mobile money service provider in Myanmar that offers real-time tracking between user bank accounts (CB Bank) and the mobile wallet, allowing customers to enjoy seamless wallet-to-bank deposits.
