Oi enters into an agreement with Alcatel-Lucent, and selects the Microsoft Mediaroom platform for its IPTV service in Brazil. The telecommunication company expects to launch its new IPTV service in the second half of 2012, providing users with an outstanding TV experience.
Oi’s strategy for the IPTV launch is based on market research that has identified a demand for this service across 20 cities from all regions of the country, in addition to Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte. The launch will be carried out in a gradual way, with the names of additional cities to be provided at a later date. Also as part of the initiative, Oi has been investing in the implementation of a new network of optical fiber that will connect customers’ residences and will offer extremely high-speed Internet access, as well as landline telephone services.
“The launch of the IPTV service will benefit our customers because it provides a more interactive and comprehensive TV experience. Also, IPTV results in income generation for the company through the provision of value-added services, such as video on demand (VOD). With this new pay-TV service, Oi strengthens its converging offer strategy,” says Oi’s Segment Director, Eduardo Aspesi.
Much more interactive than the pay-TV services currently offered in the Brazilian market, Oi’s IPTV service will allow users to have access to content via tablets, smartphones and PCs. Users are also able to watch videos on demand (VOD), “go back in time” and watch a program that has already been broadcast (‘catch up’ TV), interact through their social networks, and record programs with all access points in the house.
