Ontotext is Going to Compete in Final of the Innovation Radar Prize 2016
Ontotext, the provider of semantic technologies has been shortlisted to compete for the Innovation Radar Prize 2016, for its project PHEME
The semantic provider Ontotext will pitch with another 15 finalists in the prestigious competition of the European Commission. More than 28 000 votes sent 16 innovators to the Innovation Radar Finale in August.
Ontotext is a finalist in the category “Industrial & Enabling Technologies”, that is focused on technologies for digitization of the industry. It participated in the competition, with own intelligent software, developed within the international project PHEME, which recognizes authenticity of the content and detects rumours on the Internet and Social Media.
In PHEME, Ontotext has carried out research that required solid experience with NLP (Natural Language Processing), ontology modelling and machine learning. Algorithms for rumour detection and selection of check-worthy claims in social media were developed, which are very important issues in modern journalism. Semantic annotation of Twitter messages allows for identification of people, locations, organizations and other concepts that are trending topics in the Social Media. The software automates workflows, enabling journalists to focus on tweets showing enough information to check against public sources. These tweets will serve as sources to create news about new events or evolving stories. The automation of these workflows to scale the process and stimulate quality journalism has been recognized as an innovation.
Owing to PHEME, Ontotext has adapted its semantic and text analysis technologies to Social Media content, made new partnerships and identified new prospective markets. The company is integrating Social Media and user generated content with its already existing semantic news platform. Ontotext is now ready to relate concepts across mainstream news and knowledge bases like Wikipedia, offering a rich 360 degrees view on current events.
The Innovation Radar (IR) is a European Commission initiative to identify high potential innovations and innovators in EU-funded research and innovation ICT projects. Using the radar, 40 of the best EU-funded innovators have been identified to compete with their EU-funded innovation for the Innovation Radar Prize 2016. The public was invited to vote for their favourite innovators among these 40 in order to find the top 16, who will then get to compete in the Innovation Radar final, at the ICT proposers’ day in Bratislava on 26 September 2016.
The other categories include ICT for Society (information and communication technologies for society), Excellent Science (leading to scientific advances) and Horizon 2020 ICT Innovator (for innovators within the Horizon 2020). The aim of the competition is to pinpoint Europe’s leading innovators and draw public attention to their contribution to digital economy and society.
