Optus builds a bridge to more affordable

mobile data-roaming

March 1, 2011 – Optus today launched Bridge DataRoamUnlimited packs, a first-of-its-kind offer for Australians, giving travellers unlimited data roaming in selected Asia destinations. Available in two simple options, Optus is giving customers peace-of-mind when staying in touch with family and friends from overseas.

As one of the founding members of Bridge Alliance, Asia Pacific’s leading and largest mobile alliance, Optus will give customers the choice of a three or five day pack for their selected destination with an unlimited amount of mobile data allowance. Destinations include Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

Starting at $27 for a three day pack, the Bridge DataRoamUnlimited packs give Optus customers less to worry about when using data roaming on their smartphones to research recommended restaurants, navigate their way through a foreign city, update social networks and more. Those staying in one city longer than three days can purchase a five day Bridge DataRoamUnlimited pack for $40.

Gavin Williams, Consumer Marketing Director, Optus said, “We know Australians depend heavily on the internet to organise their travel and stay in touch whilst overseas.”

“Optus is committed to giving Australians more choice and control when it comes to managing mobile spend and the Bridge DataRoamUnlimited packs offer our customers peace-of-mind when going online overseas. We will continue to look for ways to offer best value roaming deals for our customers in other popular destinations around the world.”

“Our pledge, as the leading mobile Alliance in this region, is to continuously provide our support towards our alliance members, enabling them to offer even more competitive and high-value services to their end-customers”, said Ken Wee, interim Chief Executive Officer and Vice President, Infrastructure & Operations of Bridge Alliance.

Bridge DataRoamUnlimited packs are only available on selected Bridge Alliance networks and are allocated to a single participating Bridge Alliance network1. Optus customers will need to manually select the relevant network when they arrive at the overseas destination to ensure that they do not roam on non-Bridge Alliance networks.

Once the pack has expired, customers will be charged standard data roaming rates of $0.15/KB (minimum 10KB) or $15.36/MB for Bridge Alliance members’ networks.

In coming months, Optus’ Bridge DataRoamUnlimited packs will also extend to other Bridge Alliance members’ destinations such as Macau and India.
