P1, Malaysia’s first and largest 4G broadband provider, showcased that Malaysians can enjoy peak wireless broadband speeds of 130 Mbps with the combined power of WiMAX* and LTE TDD** technologies.

CEO of P1, Michael Lai said, “The proliferation of rich media applications namely video streaming, online gaming and online social-networking are driving consumers desire for greater bandwidth and faster speed. Not only that, high definition, larger display, WiFi TV and soon-to-come 3D small screens are also driving consumer demand whether at home or away.”

At a live demo held in Port Dickson with technology partner ZTE Corporation recently, Lai said, “P1 has been the 4G leader since late 2008 with WiMAX. Moving forward, P1 is preparing to harness the co-existence of WiMAX and LTE. This live demo illustrates the potential and power of the WiMAX-LTE co-existence.”

This means investments by existing WiMAX operators can be protected. The global subscriber base for WiMAX and LTE has reached 17.25 million and 320,000 respectively. Statistics from IDC on data usage is forecasted to reach 35 Zettabytes*** in 2011 from 0.8 Zettabytes in 2010; a whopping 44-fold increase.

Release 8 of LTE currently provides speeds of up to 150Mbps with Release 9 touted to hit 300Mbps. Meanwhile Release 10 of LTE, otherwise known as LTE-Advanced, will allow users the access of speeds up to 1Gbps.

“Wireless broadband is becoming increasingly important, not only in Malaysia, but in the region. Hence, 4G is needed to support the high growth in both mobile broadband and the handset market,” said Amrish Kacker, a partner of Analysys Mason, a premier adviser in telecoms, IT and media.

Kacker added that LTE’s eco-system is still not fully developed and players are looking to key drivers namely, China and India, to continue driving TD-LTE as a truly mobile eco-system.

While LTE will propagate, WiMAX has the advantage of experience, technology and product development and it is the best wireless solution for emerging markets and green field operators.

Until the market is ready for LTE, P1 will continue to deploy WiMAX as it is the most matured 4G technology today and will only harness the power of both WiMAX and LTE technologies when the time is right.
