Palau Telecoms goes live on O3b satellite network

Switch to O3b allows higher quality of experience

St. Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands – O3b Networks today confirmed that its customer Palau Telecoms has successfully gone live on O3b’s innovative Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellite constellation.

Located in the western Pacific Ocean, Palau’s 21,000 people are spread across 250 islands, which do not have access to undersea fiber cable. The use of O3b satellites, which are closer to the earth than conventional geostationary (GEO) satellites, reduces latency, increases Internet speed and improves voice and video quality for the user.

Palau Telecom is the second customer for O3b in Palau.   The low latency and high throughput service provided by O3b will enable Palau Telecom to provide their wireless internet customers with a higher quality of experience.

O3b’s unique combination of fiber speed with the reach and reliability of satellites has been very popular in the region. O3b’s total capacity contracted in the Pacific region is now 5 Gbps. The company’s clients in the pacific region include: Digicel PNG, Digicel Samoa, Norfolk Island Telecom, Palau National Communications Corporation, FSMTC Yap, FSMTC Chuuk, Solomon Telecom, Telecom Cook Islands and Timor Telecom.

Sam Masang, CEO, Palau Telecoms said:

“We are very proud to be among the early adopters of the O3b network, which allows us to improve our customer experience and launch new services, including Wireless TV. Palau Telecoms intends to provide a better experience to its customers by replacing the high latency GEO services with the low latency and high throughput O3b services. “

Imran Malik O3b VP – Asia Pacific & the Middle East, said:

“We are very happy to welcome Palau Telecoms as a live customer on our network. O3b’s unrivalled performance means that it is already the market leader in the Pacific region. And as demand for O3b service continues to grow, we will add new satellites to provide growth for existing customer needs and capacity for new customers that need to support latency sensitive applications such as HD video, 3G/LTE mobile data and cloud services.”
