Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China may boost manufacturing of mobile handsets, its parts, components and accessories in India: Pankaj Mohindroo, ICA

A high level Business delegation from the Indian Cellular Association (ICA) representing Indian Mobile handset Industry  is in China from today till 16th May, 2015. Mr. Narendra Modi, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India is making his first State visit to China. The ICA’s Business delegation will be participating in the high powered India – China Business Forum meeting in Shanghai on the 16th where the Hon’ble Prime Minister is expected to set the stage for a new era in the Indo – China trade and business ties.

The delegation from the Mobile handset industry is led by Mr. Pankaj Mohindroo, National President – ICA (also appointed by the Government as the Chairman – Fast Track Task Force set up by the Government of India to catalyze and re-establish Mobile handset manufacturing eco-system in India by 2019). The delegation would also comprise of Mr. Hari Om Rai, CMD – Lava International (also the co-chairman of Fast Track Task Force) and Mr. Sudhir Hasija, Chairman – UTL & Karbonn (Member of the Fast Track Task Force).

Apart from attending the India – China Business Forum meeting scheduled on 16th in Shanghai, the delegation would also interact with CEOs from major Chinese OEM brands, Chinese component manufacturers, local industry bodies and Chinese Government. The delegation would be taking this opportunity to update the Chinese side about the growing opportunities in the Indian mobile handset segment, explore business opportunities with the Chinese counterparts as well as further business engagements between the two countries.

The ICA delegation is also expected to address various business and investment forum meetings which are currently under the process of being finalized in China and a no. of MoUs are expected to be signed, said Mr. Mohindroo.

With the Government of India’s increasing focus on promoting manufacturing in the electronics sector, especially manufacturing of mobile handsets, its parts, components and accessories, which constitutes the largest pie out of the entire electronics sector in India at present, Mr. Mohindroo opines that with the support of the Chinese manufacturing eco-system the Make In India vision would be greatly bolstered.

In 2014-15, India imported close to 85% of its total domestic demand for mobile handsets through imports by volume and China based imports constituted 80% – 85% of  the total imports and the rest being imported from Vietnam.

Currently, with the prioritized objective of the Government of India to promote establishment of large scale manufacturing of mobile handsets, its parts, components and accessories and for creating India the Global HUB for ESDM sector, the upcoming visit of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India to China could not have come at a more opportune time, according to Mr. Mohindroo.

It is envisaged that the India – China business partnership would enter into a strategic phase which would be benefiting the economies of both the nations with the growth of renewed joint partnership between Indian and Chinese enterprises by setting up of manufacturing eco-system in the Mobile handset segment.
