London, October 14, 2013 – NEC Laboratories Europe will demonstrate the newly developed automated motorway speed control system prototype at the 20th ITS World Congress and Exhibition at the Tokyo Big Sight International Exhibition Center from 14-18 October 2013.

Dynamic highway speed control is achieved by changing the speed limit on a per-lane basis by means of variable speed signs. If done accurately and in a timely manner, dynamic speed control can greatly improve the efficiency and safety of traffic systems.

NEC’s prototype enables dynamic control of vehicles’ speed by controlling variable speed signs, based on the real time traffic data collected by roadside sensors. The system utilizes mixed macroscopic and microscopic model simulations inside the control loop, resulting in a more accurate and faster response to changes in the actual traffic flow. By capturing these changes, the system can also anticipate and alleviate the formation of traffic shockwaves that cause drivers to unnecessarily decelerate and accelerate their vehicles. Furthermore, with this system it is possible to influence the spatial headway among vehicles to achieve easier and safer lane changing.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and automatic speed sign recognition are becoming widespread features in vehicles. With automobile manufacturers announcing their plans to launch fully automated cars by 2020, an intelligent speed control system will amplify the environmental and safety benefits of such advanced vehicle technologies.

Looking forward, NEC will continue to capitalize on its advanced expertise on sensing technologies, big data analysis and intelligent control algorithms in order to deliver more reliable and optimized traffic systems.
