Invensys Experts Highlight New Smart City Technology as Future Model of Sustainable Development

Innovative Valdespartera Community and Smart City Plaza on Display at Smart City Expo —

NOVEMBER 13, 2012 / Barcelona, Spain Invensys Operations Management experts will be discussing some of the most cutting-edge examples of smart city technology at the Smart City Expo held 13-15 November 2012 in Barcelona. Featured amongst these implementations will be Valdespartera, one of Spains largest sustainable development projects and the first which has been built from the ground up on the Kyoto Protocols bioclimactic criteria.

Miguel Portero, General Manager of Valdespartera, will provide detailed insight into Invensys role in the project and the technology needed for smart cities like Valdespartera during the Expos session dedicated to Spanish smart cities (Thursday, 15 November, 09:00; location: Room 5).

Located in the city of Zaragoza, Valdespartera uses an innovative integral remote control monitoring system to handle most existing operations in the community, collecting data on activities that have their own management environments. Once collected, the Invensys Wonderware solution provides an analysis of the communitys compliance with environmental objectives. The advanced technology helps to remotely execute many of Valdesparteras urban public services ranging from the watering of green areas and regulating street lighting to control of the water network and monitoring of household energy consumption.

Valdespartera is a prime example of how the integration of public services through technology can help a community provide its citizens with incredibly efficient management of resources, said Donald C. Clark, VP, Global Industry Solutions and Invensys Fellow. While Valdespartera was built with this robust environmental criteria in mind, these solutions can be implemented across cities and regions worldwide. This Expo is a wonderful opportunity to discuss these implementations and learn from some of the most innovative applications of smart city technology in existence today.

Valdesparteras success in delivering multiple urban services relies on its integrated control monitoring system. The implementation of such solutions will also be addressed and expanded upon in a global context during Invensys keynote address by Donald C. Clark (Thursday, 15 November, 09:00; location: Room 6). Additional Invensys experts will be participating in several other plenary sessions, covering both specific case studies and broad technology themes:

  • Mr. Gero Kura: Panel session – Smart Grid and energy storage: November 13th, 12.30 (location: Room 6)
  • Mrs. Haneen Shouman (Wonderware UAE):  Panel session Saudi water management: November 14th, 11.30 (location: Room 3)

Invensys, a Microsoft partner, will also be exhibiting at the Expo (Hall: #2; Stand: C334), with experts illustrating powerful examples of how technology can help cities and communities address global concerns of energy efficiency and resource management. Visitors will be able to see Invensys Microsoft technology-based smart city solutions in action at the Smart City Plaza display, a 1,200 square metre living demonstration of innovative technology, and gain an understanding of their benefits including:

  • Data capture in real-time for each public service by integrating the different involved technological systems
  • Connecting, integrating and displaying data in a unified control centre so management staff can understand how services are interconnected
  • Analysing and designing response mechanisms to promote a more efficient city based on both economic and environmental considerations
  • Remote management and monitoring of all operations within the community according to established procedures, to maximize a citys liveability for its citizens
