Next generation input mechanisms evolve to synchronize the mind and sense and deliver user experience excellence

Neumarkt, Austria – 2012-03-16 ruwido today reinforced its message that new interaction techniques – such as voice control – will enhance, rather than replace, remote control devices in the living room.

At IP&TV World Forum 2012 (Olympia, London, March 20th – 22nd), the company will discuss how the majority of multi-button remote control devices have become unnecessarily complicated, and intuitive ways of navigating and selecting from content menus need to be created to enhance the user experience.

“New interaction techniques for TV are currently a hot industry topic, yet while we do not dismiss these as methods of enhancing the navigation and discovery experience, they will not replace remote control devices,” said Ferdinand Maier, CEO, ruwido. “People at home do not want to move away from the experience they are used to and they enjoy, but they should be encouraged and allowed to interact with their services in a more natural and enjoyable way. At ruwido we understand that the next generation of TV services must enable the user to feel comfortable and that every way of navigation has to be used in the right context.

We recognise that voice control could complement the functionality of remote controls for functions such as search for known content. By saying the name of a favourite actor, the search engine could find content starring that person, but when people would like to browse through an on-demand library or they would like to volume up or down, the remote control is the perfect method of doing so. Navigation via voice control alone is not enough. A hybrid solution, incorporating voice with the organic haptic concept of aura, would be a real possibility and one that we see as part of the future of input and interaction in the living room.”

ruwido will show what is required to deliver truly premium TV services that go beyond the content available to provide ‘user experience excellence’. Demonstrations at ruwido’s stand (120) will show that fundamental to enabling user experience excellence is allowing consumers to feel truly in control when interacting with their devices and services.

Concepts to discover at ruwido’s booth will include ruwido’s ‘aura’, which consists of a physical device and a graphical user interface. The aura concept allows more intuitive navigation by enabling viewers to physically push the moveable slide of an input device faster or slower depending on how they want to scroll. Depending on how much distance the moveable slide covers, the more tactile resistance is experienced by the user: thus enabling them to directly communicate their intentions to the interface. Through this method of control and design, the operator creates a sense of simplicity and transforms interaction with the content down to its basic essence and creates ease of use.
