Bandwidth-Rich Applications Are Challenging Mobile Networks

Sandvine, (TSX:SVC)(AIM:SAND) a leading provider of intelligent broadband network solutions for fixed and mobile operators, today announced it has partnered with three global companies for end-to-end media optimization solutions: Mobixell, Ortiva Wireless and Vantrix. With real-time entertainment commanding up to 43% of total Internet traffic, as discussed in Sandvine’s recent Fall 2010 Global Internet Phenomena report, many mobile operators are experiencing high network load and thus turn to Sandvine for solutions.

“The combination of Sandvine’s unique divert technology and Mobixell’s “Seamless Access”, an advanced Mobile Internet Gateway solution, enables us to provide a continuous non-stop video playing experience regardless of network fluctuations,” said Noam Green, Associate VP of Marketing at Mobixell Networks. “Smooth and continuous video experience is one of users’ strongest indicators of network quality – and ultimately influences the perception of their operator’s network efficiency.”

“Sandvine’s traffic redirection technology provides a flexible and reliable way for wireless service providers to deploy media optimization in their networks,” said Ron Garrison, VP Product Management, Ortiva Wireless. “Mobile video optimization amplifies the capacity of the existing network, deferring capex and reducing opex for service providers while at the same time improving their subscribers’ quality of experience.”

“We are excited to work with Sandvine to enable mobile operators to deliver superior video quality of experience,” said Patrick Lopez, Chief Marketing Officer, Vantrix. “Our intelligent real-time optimization and smart caching capabilities conserve network resources while at the same time enhancing the video delivery experience for subscribers. Vantrix believes that policy control is a natural complement to video optimization, to make networks more intelligent and scalable.”

Operators can integrate Sandvine’s media optimization solution with other network policies (based on conditions such as time of day, subscriber tier, bill state, and client device) to create tiered service plans tailored to meet consumers’ needs. For example, subscribers that want to enjoy movies on their state-of-the-art mobile devices anywhere, anytime, could opt to subscribe to a service plan that optimizes that experience.

Operators can deploy such solutions with minimal investment due to Sandvine’s patent-pending, advanced, granular method for diverting traffic, which ensures that only appropriate traffic flows are redirected to optimization platforms. Similar solutions based on simple port-based redirection result in considerable network inefficiencies.

“Video streaming, multimedia messaging, smartphone usage and the explosion of video-oriented apps and services, have all had a profound effect on networks,” said Tom Donnelly, EVP marketing and sales, Sandvine. “Together with its media optimization partners, Sandvine provides operators the most granular control of video assets available in the industry, and allows them to embrace the media revolution and meet the demand for high-quality media experiences.”
