SIMalliance Re-elects Chairman for 2015-16
24 September, 2015 – Hervé Pierre will continue to serve as the Chairman of SIMalliance throughout 2015-16, following a Board vote which resulted in him being re-elected at the end of his first term in office. Hervé, who holds the title Embedded Software & Products (E&P) Senior Director, Strategy, within Gemalto, served as SIMalliance’s General Secretary between 2006 and 2014.
Over the next twelve months, Hervé will continue to lead the organisation, which promotes the essential role of the secure element (SE) in delivering secure mobile applications and services across all devices that can access wireless networks. He will work alongside SIMalliance Board colleagues representing Giesecke & Devrient, Morpho, Oberthur Technologies, ST Incard and VALID.
“Thanks to the burgeoning mass-market for NFC services and the continued upward trend for connected personal devices, the secure element industry is currently in a position of strength,” comments Hervé. “In particular, the recent emergence of complementary NFC technologies has expedited NFC deployment globally and the valuable role that the SE plays within the NFC ecosystem, by delivering the highest levels of security for various NFC applications, has been widely acknowledged. This presents an opportunity for further growth.
“Active developments within the consumer IoT and M2M markets are also set to positively impact the SE market in the year ahead. The architecture of smartphones is evolving and devices are now appearing with multiple SEs: a handset may contain both a SIM, which is controlled by a mobile network operator, and an embedded SE, which is controlled by the handset manufacturer. Additionally, new models of subscription distribution and management will impact ecosystems and business models, while putting the SIM industry in a pivotal new role. The next twelve months will certainly be dynamic and progressive for our industry and I look forward to championing further market growth through SIMalliance initiatives.”
SIMalliance has continued its work to facilitate and accelerate delivery of secure mobile applications globally throughout 2014-15. Significant outputs from the past twelve months include:
- eSIM – The eUICC Profile Package: Interoperable Format Technical Specification v1.0.1 was published, to allow mobile network operators (MNOs) to remotely load and manage subscriptions across deployed machine-to-machine (M2M) and consumer devices in a standardised way. The specification, referenced by the GSMA, describes a common coding process for subscription data to be built, remotely loaded and installed into any embedded UICC, by any SIM vendor on behalf of any MNO.
· Open OS and multi SE – A new version of the OMAPI Specification was released – v3.0 – incorporating updates allowing it to be universally implemented on every type of smartphone OS globally, including Blackberry OS. The OMAPI Test Specification was also updated to align with the core specification.
· Hybrid NFC – SIMalliance delivered a campaign to educate NFC stakeholders about the security considerations within the NFC ecosystem and the approaches offered by HCE and SE deployment models. The campaign highlighted the importance of determining the best NFC security strategy based on the unique security requirements of individual NFC service use cases. Outputs were:
o Two workshops, one in Europe and the other in the US.
o A webinar.
o Visual aids which act as guidance to service providers on choosing the right NFC technology.
o A video interview filmed and made available by The Banker.
