siptel donates surplus IT equipment to Guildford Sea Cadets and local schools

Technology equipment donation enables young cadets and pupils to learn more about IT and reduce environmental waste

siptel, a leading independent new generation IT, voice and data solutions provider, has announced that it has donated its surplus technology supplies to the Guildford Sea Cadets and local schools in the community. The equipment donated will help cadets, pupils and mature students have a better understanding of IT. In addition, by recycling this equipment and donating it for reuse rather than disposing of it, siptel is helping the environment by reducing waste and the environmental impact of unwanted business technology.

Guildford Sea Cadets is one of 400 Sea Cadet Units across the UK and provides young people aged ten to eighteen the opportunity to enjoy nautical activities. Each Unit has a charitable status and raises funds to meet running costs and requirements. The Sea Cadets core purpose is to celebrate Britain’s maritime heritage and contribute to its future development by supporting young people as Sea Cadets.

The Guildford Unit is based next to the River Wey in the town centre and has a range of facilities including sports halls, classrooms, offices and changing facilities. The Unit also has a computer suite for the Cadets that are working towards a BTEC Level 2 in Public Services.

We’re really pleased to be supporting great local causes such as Guildford Schools and Guildford Sea Cadets,” said Steve Rasmussen, Director of siptel. “Being part of the IT Sector, siptel always needs to be pioneering and supplying the latest top of the range technologies to our customers, so equipment often tends to be outdated before it expires.  It would be wasteful of us to get rid of equipment that can still be extremely valuable to others, and at the same time by reducing matter that is sent for recycling we can do our bit to help the environment as well.”

Alongside technology from previous business customers of siptel, the Company has also donated new technology to help educate the Cadets and pupils. Most recently, siptel has donated a new printer and two laptops to the Guildford Sea Cadets for their Computer Suite.

“We’re thrilled that siptel has provided us with this new technology for the Unit,” said Commander Mike Evans, Chairman Guildford Sea Cadets. “We’re so fortunate to have such great facilities in Guildford that we’ve been recognised as one of the best Units in the Southern Area, and siptel’s kind and very generous donation helps us maintain a great reputation. As a local company, it’s great to see siptel giving back to the community and reducing their waste to help the environment. By providing us with the new technology, siptel is also helping Sea Cadets that are studying for BTEC Level 2 in Public Services.”

siptel has also recently donated prizes for an auction hosted by local charity, Link Leisure, including iPhones, Foxhills Country Club golf tickets and Pennyhill Park Spa day vouchers.

About the Sea Cadets (www.sea-cadets.org)

The first Sea Cadet unit was established in 1854 at Whitstable in Kent, created by communities wanting to give young people instruction on a naval theme. Traditionally old seafarers provided training while local businessmen funded the Unit Headquarters. The tradition of community-based Sea Cadet Units continues today with 400 across the UK each with charitable status enabling them to raise funds to meet their running coasts. All Units are members of the Sea Cadet Corps and are governed by the national charity MSSC – the Marine Society & Sea Cadets.

Guildford Sea Cadets (www.guildfordseacadets.co.uk) has been in operation since 1942. It was recognised in 2010 as one of the best Units in the Southern Area due to its central location in the heart of Guildford and its ethos and commitment to providing the best quality activities for young people.
