Sky Italia chooses T-VIPS IP Video Transport Solutions for Next Generation IP Contribution Network

T-VIPS supplies TVG425 ASI to IP and TVG450 JPEG2000 Gateways to provide Sky Italia with the flexibility to contribute MPEG Transport Streams and visually lossless JPEG2000 video over IP

Oslo, Norway – May 9 2011

T-VIPS, a global leader in professional video contribution and distribution solutions, today announced that its TVG425 MPEG Transport Stream and the TVG450 JPEG2000 Video Gateways have been selected to provide advanced video transport functionality for Sky Italia’s next generation contribution network. The T-VIPS Video Gateway suite is a flexible and cost-effective portfolio of products designed for real-time contribution and distribution of broadcast-quality video. The project has been delivered by T-VIPS valued business partner, CVE. The T-VIPS solutions are now integrated with the network, which will go live in the first half of 2011. This deployment, which connects Milan and Rome, is the first phase of a Sky Italia project to move to an advanced future-proofed all-IP video contribution network.

This phase of the project provides video transport, with fully redundant network routing, between studios and additional points of presence in Milan and Rome. The contribution network has been designed for maximum flexibility and supports MPEG-2/4, uncompressed SDI and JPEG2000 compression. An important feature of the TVG425 MPEG Transport Stream is that it has in-built input switching, which provides Sky Italia with automated redundancy for ASI and IP Transport Streams, removing the requirement to deploy separate dedicated switching equipment to achieve full network redundancy. The TVG450 enables Sky Italia to deploy JPEG2000 compression for the real-time contribution and distribution of broadcast quality video over IP networks and supports lossless and visually lossless compression, reducing bandwidth requirement without affecting video quality.

“The T-VIPS Video Gateway solutions enable us to transport video over IP without any discernible loss of quality in the final consumer service,” says Massimo Bertolotti Head of Platform Engineering and Innovation, Sky Italia. “We chose the T-VIPS solution because in our tests the equipment demonstrated very high quality combined with robustness and stability, plus as the pioneer of JPEG2000 in broadcast, T-VIPS has an unrivalled track record in IP transport.”

TVG450 Video Gateway

Designed for real-time contribution and distribution of broadcast quality video over IP networks, the TVG450 enables transmission of compressed 3G, HDTV and SD television over Gigabit Ethernet and provides  increased density, with up to 1 3G-SDI, 2 HD-SDI or 4 SDI channels in each unit. TVG450 takes advantage of the unmatched quality of JPEG2000 compression combined with the inherent flexibility of IP to offer broadcasters an efficient, affordable and scalable solution for studio quality high definition video contribution. TVG450 supports lossless and visually lossless compression.

Key features include: high density, support for multiple JPEG2000 compressed video channels; support for 3D; high-quality 10-bit video; frame-by-frame encoding which increases resiliency; very low delay (< 60 ms) and MXF encapsulation, suitable for file-based workflow. The solution is compact, cost-effective and has user-friendly configuration and control.

TVG425 IP Gateway

The TVG425 provides transparent handling of up to eight independent MPEG Transport Streams (TS), flexible interfacing with support for ASI, Ethernet and SONET/SDH, as well as output diversity and input switching capabilities that enable cost-effective and highly redundant video transport solutions. The TVG425 is part of the T-VIPS Video Gateway suite, a line of compact, powerful and cost-effective products designed for real-time contribution and distribution of broadcast quality video over IP-enabled networks. The product is the result of long pioneering experience in video-over-IP solutions. Applications include professional broadcast contribution and distribution, transport stream interface adaptation (ASI, IP, SONET/SDH), IP-to-IP applications such as multicast-to-unicast conversion and live event coverage.

Key Features include:

• Transmission of up to eight independent MPEG-2 Transport Streams (TS)

• Flexible Transport Stream interfacing, including support for MPEG-2 TS over DVB-ASI and IP

• Industry-leading support for IP video technologies, including advanced FEC, QoS and VLAN support

• Transport Stream Monitoring

• Multiple Ethernet Data interfaces

• Input Redundancy with input switching on loss of signal on both ASI and IP

“Demanding projects like the Sky Italia next generation contribution network are really exciting to work on because the customer has invested in new technologies for a critical application and they expect those solutions to work for many years to come. When you win one of these projects it demonstrates that you have backed the right technologies in your product roadmap, implemented well and provided the right functionality for the future,”  says Johnny Dolvik, CEO, T-VIPS. “I’m therefore delighted to be part of the Sky Italia next generation contribution network and look forward to our solutions playing a part in delivering pay-tv in Italy well into the future.”
