Tail-f Systems Helps Networking Equipment Providers Take the Pain Out of Provisioning Carrier Ethernet Services

by david.nunes

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN – October 28, 2010 – Tail-f Systems, the leading provider of configuration management software for networking equipment providers, today announced the first model-driven configuration management application for provisioning Carrier Ethernet services. NCS for Carrier Ethernet will benefit both service providers and networking equipment providers by enabling the activation of complex services in less time and with fewer resources. NCS also radically simplifies the development of new and enhanced management systems, allowing developers to bring new products to market much faster.

NCS is a general applications framework for building configuration management systems. NCS for Carrier Ethernet extends the value of NCS by incorporating service and device models plus a Web UI optimized for implementing Carrier Ethernet management systems.

“Communications service providers are expecting their networking equipment suppliers to deliver element management systems that activate services quickly and reliably,” said Glen Hunt, Principal Analyst, Current Analysis. “New approaches to automated network configuration management are needed to ensure that the deployment of Carrier Ethernet reaches its full potential.”

NCS Highlights

  • NCS is a model-driven application that allows developers to map service models to device-level configuration changes using a patent-pending mapping algorithm
  • With the ability to perform real time, service-oriented changes, NCS enables networking equipment providers to effectively provision modern complex services
  • NCS applies configuration changes in lock-step across the entire network and automatically rolls them back if all changes cannot be correctly applied
  • NCS auto-renders management interfaces and APIs including NETCONF, CLI, Web UI, and Java APIs from a single data model
  • NCS includes a built-in device simulator that allows developers to code and test EMS features without access to large network testbeds
  • NCS for Carrier Ethernet provides a complete provisioning system implementing all applicable models and use cases described by the Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF)

NCS Benefits for the Carrier Ethernet Industry:

  • Enables networking equipment providers to augment and build powerful, standards-based configuration management applications in a fraction of current development time
  • Makes Communications Service Providers more competitive by reducing their development time for provisioning systems that support new services
  • Allows Communications Service Providers to turn up services much faster and meet customer delivery expectations
  • Radically reduces the need for specialized network configuration engineers and the cost of sustaining engineering to support complex adapter software
  • Improves service quality by decreasing network disruptions caused by configuration errors

“Offerings like Business Ethernet Services, Mobile Backhaul, and Video Transport are much more complex to provision than data connectivity, and for too long the industry has lacked tools powerful enough to do so,” said Carl Moberg, COO, Tail-f Systems. “A model-driven application with built-in transaction management, NCS simplifies the provisioning process by eliminating the massive amounts of coding that developers previously used to manage and track changes.”

“We are implementing Tail-f Systems’ NCS with a mutual customer to build a powerful EMS application,” said Göran Edin, Lead Solutions Architect, EMS/OSS Applications, Data Ductus. “Using NCS to develop your service models is a walk in the park. The product launched us from a model into a working Eclipse project within a day. I am confident that NCS will significantly accelerate our customers’ time to market and reduce development cost and risks.”

Availability
NCS for Carrier Ethernet will be available in Q4, 2010. Future releases of NCS will include implementations for other services and versions optimized for integration at the OSS layer. For more information on NCS and NCS for Carrier Ethernet, please visit www.tail-f.com.
