ANNAPOLIS, MD, Feb 27, 2012 –TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ: TSYS), a world leader in highly reliable and secure mobile communication technology, and Telefonica, one of the world’s largest telecommunications network operators, today jointly announced a partnership for TCS to provide navigation services for Telefonica subscribers throughout Latin America. Through TCS’ market-leading navigation services, Telefonica customers will have continuous access to local directories, maps and driving directions directly from their mobile devices.

“A recent study from ABI Research indicates that the navigation application market in Latin America is expected to more than triple in the next three years,” said Javier Cobo, regional product & service director for Telefonica Latin America. “We know that in order to capitalize on this opportunity, we must provide our customers with navigation applications that they consider to be a strong value, and TCS’ market-leading navigation solutions allow us to best accomplish this goal by offering top-notch turn-by-turn navigation, as well as context-aware content, like traffic information, movie listings and more.”

The TCS navigation engine supports multiple modes, including automobile and pedestrian navigation, turning any GPS-enabled mobile phone into a powerful personal navigation device. Finding a precise location is effortless with TCS’ dynamic local search engine, which allows users to quickly access accurate points of interest and turn-by-turn directions with a single click. TCS provides white-label, hosted and managed location-based services to mobile operators globally with an integrated, uniform experience across consumer devices. In addition, TCS can directly provide developers with location-based services spanning devices, operating systems and CPU architectures.

“Telefonica saw the opportunity to strengthen their market leadership by offering their subscribers TCS’ award-winning and highly reliable navigation services,” said Jason Penkethman, vice president of product management for TCS’ navigation and telematics group. “By providing a Movistar-branded and powerful navigation solution, Telefonica’s subscribers will be connected with the richness of their surroundings by instantly mapping their location, finding useful local information and discovering new places and things to do around them.”

With more than a decade of experience in networks around the world, TCS delivers world-class navigation and location-based services to more than 60 carriers and telematics service providers in North America, South America, Europe, Australia and Asia.
