Televes integrates Civolution’s NexGuard Forensic Watermarking to protect Pay TV delivery in MDU

The integration of NexGuard forensic watermarking technology ensures secure delivery of content to each location

Eindhoven, The Netherlands, September 4th, 2014 – Civolution, the leading provider of technology and solutions for identifying, managing and monetizing content and Televes, a manufacturer of equipment for the reception and distribution of television signals, today announced the integration and deployment of Civolution’s content protection technology NexGuard with Televes multi-dwelling unit (MDU) broadcasting signal distribution system for the global market.

Televes has developed live encoders and modulators that are deployed and used in head-ends of MDU broadcasting signal distribution systems to distribute original satellite signals over QAM/COFDM/ISDB-T/IP networks. To ensure that its T.0X distribution system offers utmost content protection, Televes has integrated Civolution’s forensic watermarking technology NexGuard into the processors of the chipsets used in Televes’ Clear QAM encoder modules.

The implementation of NexGuard enables Televes to embed a unique digital video watermark payload in each channel of the descrambled content that is subsequently distributed and delivered via QAM/COFDM/ISDB-T/IP networks to authorized recipients in the multi-dwelling unit. Each MDU is identified by unique watermark identifiers.

By integrating Civolution’s NexGuard with its encoders, Televes has developed an advanced forensic video analysis solution, which allows pay TV operators, such as Dish Network and DirecTV, to secure the content they deliver to their large number of subscribers.

“The television landscape has changed dramatically over the last decade, and one of the issues caused by developments such as multiscreen are increasingly complex security challenges. Deploying Civolution’s forensic marking solution enables us to gain access to the highest quality content and therefore provide the best possible experience for our customers,” said Manuel Martínez, General Commercial Manager of Televes. “The addition of Civolution’s NexGuard to our MDU distribution system tackles the risk of unauthorized redistribution of content, ensuring that premium channels, content providers and rights owners can rest assured that their most valuable content is protected as it is distributed through our head-ends.”

“Content is still king and it is imperative that companies can ensure the safe transmission of premium video content to every screen,” said Alex Terpstra, CEO, Civolution. “Piracy continues to be a very real threat and Televes needs the means to overcome this challenge. By integrating NexGuard with Televes’ MDU broadcasting signal distribution system, we are providing a system that is mutually beneficial for the content provider and the end user.”

The content delivered through the multi-dwelling unit (MDU) broadcasting signal distribution system is watermarked by Civolution’s NexGuard in the processors of the chipsets used in Televes encoders.  Whenever PayTV content is accessed or distributed, NexGuard embeds in real-time an imperceptible watermark into the video. Even after severe quality degradation such as scaling, cropping, compression and camcorder copying, pirated content can still be traced back to a specific subscriber or MDU location. NexGuard is designed for integration in STBs, TVs, Video Encoders, VOD servers and OTT streaming.
