Think Global Flight brings aviation to life for students across the world

Inmarsat IsatPhone Pro will once again form link between aircraft and students

21 May 2015Inmarsat (LSE:ISAT.L), the leading provider of global mobile satellite communications services, is continuing its support for Think Global Flightin 2015. It will provide satcom equipment for Captain Judy Rice’s round-the-world tour as she continues her mission to promote greater interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.

Starting in June in Burbank, California and stretching beyond Shanghai to then return tothe start point on 15 August, this year’s awareness-raising mission takes Captain Judy, Strikethrough Navigator Fred Nauer and Citation owner, Edwin Sahakian, to 32 cities across the world. In each city, they will speak to students and parents about international green technologies, STEM education in relation to aviation and aerospace, and the opportunities it brings for children from all demographics.

Part of the tour programme will be the Student Command Centres (SCCs) which allow students to research and analyse the data Captain Judy needs to circumnavigate the globe. Inmarsat equipment will once again connect Captain Judy and her team with the SCCs.

Captain Judy will have an Inmarsat IsatPhone Pro, SIM card, and ground communication time. The Isatphone Pro is a handheld satellite phone that enables calls, including voicemail, SMS and email, and GPS location data. Captain Judy will use it to make daily reports to all global participants at the end of each leg.

“We were thrilled with our Inmarsat equipment during our national tour in the Citation Mustang Cirrus SR22T and look forward to using it again for this trip,” said Captain Judy Rice. “Most importantly, it forms the vital link between our aircraft and the Student Command Centres. Transmitting flight information and talking to students makes the whole thing real for them; there is nothing more powerful than that.”

“We are delighted to support Think Global Flight again this year,” said Leo Mondale, Inmarsat President, Aviation. “Captain Judy and her team make aviation and STEM education fun and interactive for students from all corners of the planet. It is exactly this sort of initiative which we need to effectively promote STEM education. We wish Captain Judy well on this year’s trip and look forward to following her progress.”
