Timico launches Next Generation Mobile Internet Service Provision for smartphone and tablet market

Proliferation of mobile industry sees introduction of new ISP offerings and services, including UK’s first cloud-based service for Mobile Device Management and Security which opens up the capability to the  SMB market

Newark, UK – April 6, 2011 – Timico, one of the fastest growing UK business to business Internet Service Providers (ISP) today announced the formation of a Mobile Internet Service Provision (MSIP) unit to service the growing market for management of smartphones and tablets in the business environment.

In addition, the company has partnered with Sybase, an SAP company, to bring the UK’s first cloud-based mobile device management and security service, Sybase Afaria®  to the local SMB market. Sybase Afaria has been recognised as the leader in mobile device management enterprise software for eight consecutive years. It provides businesses with a single administrative console to centrally manage; secure and deploy mobile data, applications and devices.

Timico’s MSIP, as well as Sybase Afaria, will provide small and medium sized businesses with access to technologies and services that have hitherto only been affordable to large enterprises. There are two drivers behind this move:

·        The proliferation of employee-owned devices being brought into the workplace and used for business purposes causes security concerns with corporate data kept on personal handsets;

·        Businesses themselves are beginning to use iPads and other tablets and smartphones for genuine workplace productivity applications.

“The partnership with Sybase enables our SMB customers to confidently embrace ISP and cloud technologies and services, while having complete peace of mind that company data is safe and secure,” says Trefor Davies, co-founder and CTO of Timico. “We are currently experiencing a smartphone explosion and tremendous growth in mobile data usage. For example, according to Ronan Dunne Chief Executive Officer, Telefónica O2 UK on the O2 blog in 2010  the mobile operator was seeing  a doubling of its data traffic on its network every four months. The fusion of mobile and Internet will therefore continue to demand mobile-specific solutions, especially from a security point of view,” says Davies.

Due to its unique business model of being both a mobile service provider and one of the UK’s premium B2B ISPs, Timico is able to offer tailored and flexible offerings to the market. Building on its ISP experience of network management, the company has assembled an unrivalled set of capabilities to serve this market. One of these include a hosted version of the Global market leader Sybase Afaria platform, which allows access to world class MDM and MDS technology on a Security as a Service basis.

The Timico service is device OS agnostic and can manage all the main vendor types including Apple’s iOS, RIM, Android and Windows Mobile 7.

To complement its MDM and MDS services  Timico has invested in connectivity to provide multi-tenant Mobile Access Management services.  This will allow SMBs to extend their corporate networks securely onto mobile devices without using the public internet. Internet access can now be filtered or restricted entirely. Mobile devices are ‘behind’ the firewall so there is no need for a VPN and internet usage policies can be extended to mobile users. This is the first such “multitenant” service from an O2 Service Provider in the UK and is the first time that this type of service has become affordable to SMBs.

Together, Timico and Sybase are setting out to transform SMBs in the UK through mobility solutions that bring unprecedented levels of productivity and security without the complexity, allowing these businesses to offer enterprise-level solutions at small business prices.

“When you consider the Home Office statistics released in 2010 by Alan Campbell, Minister for Crime Prevention suggesting that in 2009, 228 mobile phones were reported stolen in the UK every hour, the security of personal mobile devices brought into the workplace is clearly a problem,” says Davies.
