UDC2: IGEL’s Popular Thin Client Software Becomes Even More Versatile

IGEL sets sights on laptops and notebooks with new universal thin client and PC migration software – IGEL Universal Desktop Converter 2 (UDC2).

Reading, UK October 24th, 2013 – IGEL Technology is expanding its new firmware concept to its internationally successful thin client and PC migration software, the IGEL Universal Desktop Converter (UDC). The new UDC2 can now convert, standardize and manage even more thin clients and PC’s, alongside use of the IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS) solution.

The UDC2’s core application is standardizing the operating systems used by thin clients, PCs, nettops and notebooks, as well as joint, time-saving remote administration using a standardized management interface. The new version of the thin client software also supports an even wider range of WiFi solutions and accelerated graphics drivers. IGEL has now added the latest models from Acer, Dell/ Wyse, Fujitsu, Samsung and HP to the choice of thin clients that can be converted.

The heart of the new IGEL UDC2 is the IGEL Linux 5 operating system, which was launched at the beginning of October. The Universal Desktop firmware that is based on the OS impresses with a range of industry-leading security features, device drivers, software tools and protocols for accessing a raft of different VDI and cloud computing environments. These include Citrix XenApp/ XenDesktop, VMware Horizon View or Microsoft Remote Desktop Services (RDS), as well as native IBM System i/ AS/400 access and a local Web browser. It also comes with the terminal emulation collection Ericom PowerTerm, which can be activated free of charge on IGEL’s website.

To address special requirements, the new firmware also provides two further features that can be optionally licensed: a Codec Pack for local multimedia decoding and the software extension Shared WorkPlace, which can be used for user-dependent configuration of the converted PCs and thin clients after login.

Perfect user experience, also on mobile devices

The UDC2 supports a wide range of WiFi solutions and accelerated graphics drivers. As a result, PC users whose devices have been converted into an IGEL Universal Desktop using the UDC2 can now enjoy a seamless user experience. The accelerated video mode is now enabled as standard, allowing dual-view modes and higher resolutions above those of VESA (if they are supported by the graphics card). The battery-level indicator for laptops and notebooks is also a new feature.

Convertible thin clients and system requirements

The third-party thin clients that can be migrated using the UDC2 now include the following new models: Acer Veriton N2110G, Dell/ Wyse D50D, Fujitsu Futuro S700 and S900, and HP t510 and t610. Earlier models of IGEL Universal Desktops, however, are not convertible, because of new system requirements: The UDC2 needs at least a 1-GB RAM and 1 GB of flash/ HDD memory (IDE, USB or SATA).

“We have observed that our customers are also increasingly using the IGEL Universal Desktop Converter for standardization of popular hardware platforms, in particular for laptops and notebooks, in addition to migration and extending the service life of their hardware,” explains Simon Richards, IGEL Managing Director for the UK & Ireland. “We’ve created the ideal software for these purposes with UDC2 and have also made it possible to reduce costs thanks to central remote management.”

Availability

The IGEL Universal Desktop Converter 2 (UDC2) is now available at a price of £49 + VAT (for end customers). The optional Codec Pack costs £17 + VAT (non-recurring) and the Shared WorkPlace feature £24 + VAT (non-recurring).
