UPnP Forum Bridges IoT and Cloud with UPnP+

UPnP+ demonstration for Cloud and IoT to take place at IBC 2014

Amsterdam – 23 July 2014:  Global home networking standards group, UPnP Forum, is driving UPnP+ forward, using the Cloud to connect the Internet of Things (IoT) to the things you will have in your home and make those things even more capable. UPnP Forum, which is exhibiting at this year’s IBC (12-16 September), will demonstrate UPnP+ capabilities using sensor management control over a Cloud network to show how UPnP can integrate devices into the IoT.

UPnP Forum has created a strategy around using new and existing UPnP device control protocols (DCPs) and UPnP Cloud architecture to provide UPnP protocols specifically for IoT applications. UPnP core technology provides a base for IoT, creating bridges to both wide-area networks and non-IP devices. The Forum has already produced DCPs for lights, thermostats, automatic blinds and security cameras, and is now developing support for new IoT devices, specifically those with constrained resources.

Scott Lofgren, President, UPnP Forum, said: “UPnP+ provides an improved, seamless experience for the consumer and creates new values and opportunities for manufacturers, developers and integrators. We’re leveraging existing UPnP protocols, taking them into the Cloud to bridge the IoT while continuing to support legacy UPnP devices.

Incorporating IPv6, capabilities for discovering Cloud services and new grouping/pairing capabilities, UPnP+ includes a host of enhancements and will deliver improved interoperability baselines. It also mandates energy management and security features that were previously optional for gaining UPnP certification.

“By upgrading interoperability baselines with UPnP+, the market will benefit from device protection, security, energy management, protocol bridging and sensor management capabilities,” added Lofgren. “UPnP+ demonstrates our commitment to updating and maintaining specifications to support the billions of devices already connected by UPnP. UPnP+ provides even greater value to the industry as Cloud connectivity and the IoT enable new and exciting digital experiences.”

The UPnP Forum booth will be in Hall 14, stand L17 at IBC 2014. A UPnP+ demonstration will be included in the Content Everywhere hub demo presentations at 11:30am on Sunday 14 September in Hall 14. About UPnP Forum
UPnP Forum, established in 1999, is a global alliance of more than 1,000 industry-leading organizations working to enable device-to-device interoperability and facilitate easier and better home networking. The Forum promotes the adoption of uniform technical device interconnectivity standards and certifies devices conforming to these standards. UPnP Forum is an impartial group enabling member companies to participate and develop extensions to the UPnP Device Architecture, which defines how to use the Internet Protocol (IP) to communicate between devices, and Device Control Protocols (DCPs), which are services between devices. Members of UPnP Forum include market leaders in computing, printing and networking, consumer electronics, home appliances, automation, control and security, and mobile products.
