WiFi tractors arrive at Great Yorkshire Show

A first for this year’s Great Yorkshire Show will be two tractors ‘wifi’ tractors – making a guest appearance after receiving rave reviews on the Tour de France Grand Départ.

Thanks to a collaboration between the NFU, Massey Ferguson and satellite broadband company Avonline, the tractors have been given a hi-tech makeover that sees them able to create a free wifi hotspot extending 500 metres in all directions from each vehicle.

They will be situated on the President’s Lawn and beside the sheep and pig displays giving people the perfect vehicle to get online and perhaps post photos and comments to Facebook and Twitter.

“The tractors were unveiled for this weekend’s Tour de France, designed to help people access the internet out in the countryside where we know only too well how difficult that can be,” said NFU regional director Richard Pearson.

“With so much going on at the show, which is the ultimate showcase for farming in the area, it was obvious that we should try and get the tractors straight to Harrogate as the Tour departs for the South East.

“We were delighted that our partners agreed to extend the project for another three days and give local showgoers the chance to take advantage of such a great innovation.”

Lindsay Haddon from Massey Ferguson said: “We were delighted to be involved with the Tour de France and taking the tractors to the Yorkshire Show was an obvious move, before they have to return to their usual duties. Hopefully they will help many enjoy the benefits of the internet while they are enjoying the show.”

Mark Wynn from Avonline Broadband added: “We think this is a great way of keeping people connected while they are enjoying the Great Yorkshire Show – and a powerful way of showing how modern satellite broadband technology can deliver fast broadband anywhere in the country. Thousands of people in rural locations have already signed up to get satellite broadband, and the message is now spreading.”
