LINUXCON EUROPE, Dusseldorf, Germany – Oct. 13, 2014 – Wind River®, a world leader in delivering software for intelligent connected systems, today introduced the latest version of Wind River Linux. For maximum flexibility and speedier development, customers can now access Wind River Linux as binary code, in addition to source code format. The new version is also updated with the current Linux kernel, toolchain, and user space based on the upcoming Yocto Project release.

Now, with simplified delivery of Wind River Linux as binary code, customers can jump-start their projects by deploying the Wind River Linux image directly onto their target system. The on-target agent automatically updates binaries by downloading from Wind River repositories. The self-hosted installation allows developers to easily compile and deploy applications directly from the target device.

Wind River Linux delivers the flexibility and innovation that comes with open source, including support for the upcoming Yocto Project 1.7 release and interoperability with other open source projects such as Toaster and Eclipse, combined with the long term commercial support needed for the lifetime maintenance of a device. For example, as part of this comprehensive commercial support and maintenance, Wind River provides assessment and remediation support for on-going security vulnerabilities.

“Wind River delivers the fastest path to commercially supported Yocto Project releases, and now we’ve simplified the delivery of Wind River Linux to ease development for an even broader audience,” said Dinyar Dastoor, vice president of product management at Wind River. “Ultimately, by using Wind River Linux as a foundation, customers can spend more time focusing on high-priority areas and deploy  projects faster with less wasted time. They can also rest assured that they’re employing the latest open source innovations and receiving the global support and long term maintenance that comes from a leading commercial-grade embedded Linux.”

“A Yocto Project champion from the very start, Wind River continues to nurture open source innovation. This is greatly appreciated from the community, especially as software projects become more complex,” Mike Woster, chief operating officer of The Linux Foundation. “From easier access to the latest Yocto Project releases to delivering commercial support, Wind River has been active in helping teams tackle open source challenges in order to move forward and focus on developing what is most important to them.”

Developed from the Yocto Project open source development infrastructure, Wind River Linux uses the latest Linux kernel as its upstream source to ensure customers have commercially supported access to the newest advancements from the open source community. Wind River Linux includes hardware support for the latest ARM®, Intel®, MIPS, and Power architectures. A highly versatile solution, Wind River Linux provides a run-time environment that can be tailored to scale across a wide range of projects, from general purpose and high-performing real-time devices to carrier grade, virtualization and highly secure military applications.
