Flagship MXK OLT entrenched with Norway power utility to provide new services via fiber

Oakland, CA — October 26, 2010 — Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE), a global pioneer in FTTx network access solutions, announced today that LOS Bynett (LOS), a local power utility and fiber network owner in Norway, is the latest customer to select its industry-leading  MXK™ multi-service access node (MSAN) system. LOS, a division of Agder Energi, will integrate Zhone’s flagship intelligent FTTx access platform into its network to boost its fiber build out and offering in the Kristiansand region, similar to what Norway power utility Tussa Kraft recently announced it is doing in the Sunnmøre region.

After extensive testing, LOS has begun to integrate the MXK platform into its (OSS) system and deploy the system in the field which, upon completion, will improve reliability and capacity of LOS’ triple-play service for subscribers in the region. The MXK allows LOS to offer service speeds of up to 1 Gbps to its subscribers without creating bottlenecks in the network. By deploying the industry’s leading access solution for density, throughput and switching capacity, LOS can deliver next-generation voice, video and high-speed data services to new and existing customers and support extended usage demands at current and future subscriber levels.

“MXK remains a top-selling solution in the Nordic region, as demonstrated by the addition of LOS to our expanding customer roster,” explained Brian Caskey, chief marketing officer for Zhone. “We are proud to offer LOS aid in delivering high-bandwidth triple-play services to consumers in its service footprint.  Our goal is to not only help LOS become more competitive today, but also ensure they can remain nimble and truly maximize their fiber investments so they launch even more advanced services as market demand dictates.”

LOS is already recognizing MXK’s flexibility and current ability to power future service expansions as it prepares for additional network upgrades that combine today’s Active Ethernet deployments with GPON technologies for rural areas. With MXK’s support for both passive and active Ethernet and GPON in parallel on the same chassis, LOS has the option to configure its networks with maximum flexibility and efficiency using a combination of GPON splitters and dedicated fiber connections.

The single access system design eases the customer provisioning requirements typically associated with triple-play services and minimizes the resources needed for support, maintenance and technical personnel training.  These operational benefits, combined with a more simplified integration process, have enabled LOS to more effectively manage rising network operation costs. In addition, LOS is able to reduce the number of deployment sites by adding GPON with extended reach in Kristiansand, further reducing both capital and operating expenditures.

“Before we deployed Zhone’s MXK platform, we found ourselves facing scalability and reliability challenges as we began to expand the reach of our triple-play services to even more customers within our footprint,” explained Per I. Settane, vice president of strategic alliances, LOS. “However, we are now beginning to experience improvements in our network performance as a result of current infrastructure upgrades and anticipate that we’ll see that positive trend continue as we expand deployment of Zhone’s MXK in the coming months.”

The MXK platform utilizes Zhone’s established single line multi-service (SLMS) access operating system for sophisticated service intelligence to guarantee high quality of experience for subscribers.  As a result, the future-proof platform offers LOS multi-access points at highly efficient capacities and costs and gives the power utility – like other Zhone customers in the region – the option to seamlessly integrate additional broadband technologies like 10G GPON into the network as consumer demand increases.
