ZTE and China Unicom demonstrate 5G MEC-based VR service solution

29 June 2016, Shenzhen, China – ZTE Corporation (0763.HK / 000063.SZ), a major international provider of telecommunications, enterprise and consumer technology solutions for the Mobile Internet, today announced at its joint MWC Shanghai conference with China that, together with China Unicom, it has demonstrated a mobile edge computing (MEC) solution basing on 5G architecture and showed what the impact of MEC solutions will be on future network evolution. The ZTE MEC solution is based on cloud aware soft-network architecture and network elements can be deployed according to customised requirements, which is suitable for flexible future network evolution. The ZTE MEC solution offers open platform, which shortens application development, deployment periods and facilitates the positive evolution of the MEC application system. On-premises deployments of MCE solutions can effectively improve network responsiveness and reduce latency.

At the conference, ZTE displayed an integrated demonstration of the QCell indoor coverage solution and MEC solution, offering an innovative method for indoor big data applications. In an industry first, ZTE also successfully demonstrated virtual reality (VR) video applications with the MEC solution, offering wireless VR experiences to conference visitors.

As IT networks and CT networks have become more deeply integrated, big data solutions are recognized as a hot topic, the massive deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) is on the way and VR/augmented reality (AR) applications are also prospering. In order to offer a better service environment for all these applications, operators are urgently seeking to optimise their mobile network capability and reduce latency by localising content caching and applications so they can be hosted in close proximity to mobile users.

To fulfil operators’ demands on network evolution, ZTE has been actively participating and leading the MEC standardisation process in the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Meanwhile ZTE, with its powerful R&D capability, has developed its own version of a MEC solution, which can offer high-performance network experiences for users, and customised application services.

ZTE, not only as the leader in the MEC standardisation process, but also as an own version MEC solution provider, is a robust and reliable partner for operators in future network evolution, rich application development and extreme user experience assurance.
