ZTE Corporation joins OpenFog Consortium

Elected to Board to help acceleration of fog computing

27 February 2017, Barcelona, Spain – ZTE Corporation (0763.HK / 000063.SZ), a major international provider of telecommunications, enterprise and consumer technology solutions for the Mobile Internet, today announced it has become the first major Chinese telecom infrastructure company to join the OpenFog Consortium. The consortium is a global organisation formed to create a universal computing and communication framework around fog computing to help solve interoperability challenges in communication, wireless, and 5G technologies.

Fog computing technology is a critical component of 5G application frameworks and ultra low latency applications. It’s a perfect instance of combined M-ICT services. The OpenFog framework aims to host across-industry sectors’ applications at the network edge. The system-level architecture brings computing, storage, control and networking functions closer to the edge of the network where massive amounts of data are generated, and delivers an excellent experience of ultra-low delay services over current and 5G networks.

The OpenFog Consortium (www.OpenFogConsortium.org), formed by leading ICT companies, sets its goal as “driving industry and academic leadership in fog computing architecture, testbed development and a variety of interoperability and composability deliverables that seamlessly leverage cloud and edge architectures to enable end-to-end IoT scenarios.”

ZTE intends to develop vertical-specific OpenFog testbeds utilising global standard compliant 5G technologies to meet the needs of vastly different enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), massive machine type communications (MTC) and ultra-reliable and low latency communication (uRLLC) applications.
