ZTE leads global telecommunications industry in optical network innovation

ZTE launches industry-first XG-PON1 solution for ASIC integration, delivering superior performance and lower power consumption

29 April 2014, Shenzhen, China – ZTE Corporation (“ZTE”) (H share stock code: 0763.HK / A share stock code: 000063.SZ), a publicly-listed global provider of telecommunications equipment, network solutions and mobile devices, has launched the industry’s first XG-PON1 (asymmetric 10 gigabits per second passive optical network) solution for ASIC (application-specific integrated circuit) integration, delivering superior performance and lower power consumption to customers.

ZTE’s innovative solution provides ASIC-based 8-port XG-PON1 access and comes with supporting ASIC ONUs (optical network units), including multi-dwelling units (MDUs) and optical network terminals (ONTs). The benefits of the solution include low power consumption, high board port density, superior performance, high reliability, and the ability to smoothly upgrade by fully reusing the existing PON resources.

“We are pleased to lead the global industry in innovation in this important market segment,” said Zhu Yongxing, Vice President, ZTE Corporation. “ZTE is committed to offering the highest-performance optical network products to help customers build superior networks.”

The growth of services such as 3D video, 4K Ultra HD TV, and cloud storage in recent years increases bandwidth demand and presents huge challenges for the access capabilities of networks. As the current EPON/GPON technology will not meet the long-term bandwidth requirements, the industry is looking increasingly to XG-PON1 as a key part of the solution.

ZTE’s XG-PON1 solutions have already been deployed by a number of Chinese and overseas operators. In 2012, ZTE initiated the world’s first XG-PON1 commercial trial in the UK, cementing ZTE’s position as an industry leader. By enabling services such as leased line, wavelength leasing, backhaul and fronthaul, the newly unveiled XG-PON1 solution helps operators build wired/wireless integrated and full-service access networks.

ZTE puts substantial resources in various PON areas, including standards formulation and tracking; new-technology research and development; ODN (organisation development network) planning, design and management; and network diagnosis and testing. As a result of these efforts, ZTE is now able to offer end-to-end solutions for FTTx (fibre to the x) deployment.

As a leader in the optical access market, ZTE serves global operators with first-rate products and has always been the frontrunner in the 10G PON segment. In the latest report on the global fixed-network market by industry research company Ovum, ZTE held more than 70percent of the global 10G PON market in 2013.
